Vitiligo is a type of skin disorder in which the skin develops white patches, which might enlarge further only in specific areas of the skin. The white patches are not because the person does not have any skin cells nor has them in fewer numbers. Melanocytes are the cells which are responsible for producing the skin cells’ pigmentation, and melanin is the substance that provides color to the skin, as well as protects us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is very difficult and nearly impossible to say how much of the skin will be affected by vitiligo, but usually, once affected, it remains as such for the person for the rest of his or her life.

Causes:

The cause is not yet known exactly but some researchers have come up with the following, mentioned below.

Autoimmune disorders, such as hyperthyroidism, contribute to the destruction of melanocytes

Viral causes

Genetic oxidative stress disorder

Neural causes

Stressful events

Exposure to certain chemicals

Harm to the skin because of sunburn or due to cuts

Types:

There are two types of vitiligo. They are non-segmental and segmental.

Non-segmental vitiligo

This type of vitiligo is the most common one and 90% of those affected has this type of disorder. In this type, the patches will be clearly visible on both sides of the body with a kind of symmetry. The symmetrical patches are mainly due to the exposure of the skin to the sun daily, and it will commonly appear on areas such as the:

Face

Hands

Neck

Back of the hands

Knees

Eyes

Arms

Mouth

Elbows

Feet

There are subcategories in non-segmental vitiligo, which are:

Generalized vitiligo – this is the most common pattern, which will not have any size or specific area to begin with

Acrofacial vitiligo – this type will occur in the areas of the toe and fingers

Mucosal vitiligo – this type will appear on the lips and the mucous membrane

Universal vitiligo – this covers almost the entire body, but are extremely rare

Focal vitiligo – small patches only in specific areas and is common among young children

Segmental vitiligo

This type has a different appearance, and once it appears on the skin, it stays there for the rest of the person’s life. When compared to non-segmental vitiligo, this is much less common and affects only 10 % of people with vitiligo. This is very common among young children, and 30% of the affected children have this type. But there is nothing to worry as it responds well to topical treatments.

If you encounter symptoms of vitiligo, know that there is available treatment for it. Some simple options include tattooing small patches of affected skin; another option is skin grafting from the person’s owns kin. Also available are phototherapy treatments with UVB light and phototherapy with UVA light. These treatments should be done only under the guidance of a doctor so that vitiligo can be managed effectively and safely.

Vitiligo is a skin disorder that is also classified as a social disorder because of the psychological distress it can cause in the affected person. Vitiligo is characterized by a pigmentation deficiency. This deficiency can be caused by a number of factors. For instance, when a certain chemical produces an allergic reaction on the skin on contact, the cellular components of the skin may undergo some changes, thereby leading to discoloration.

The immunity factor can also cause serious troubles, and one of them is vitiligo skin discoloration. Vitiligo has the tendency to attack any region in the body, and this can considerably alter a person’s lifestyle. Vitiligo can be cured with some natural as well advanced methods but they may take some time and so there is a need for a temporary cure. One such temporary cure refers to those cover-ups that can hide white patches.

Vitiligo cover lotion effects:

Vitiligo cover lotion is used by many vitiligo patients mainly because most temporary solutions take a long time for the effects to be seen, while the cover lotion, albeit temporary, provides instant coverage. This is important because a person’s social life cannot end just because of this disorder.

There are no restrictions for this defect to occur in people. It also occurs regardless of climatic conditions in a person’s habitat and a person’s lifestyle. Melanin pigmentation needs to stay healthy with a proper diet. It is difficult to determine the exact causes of vitiligo, but certain factors have been identified as triggers.

Are there side effects?

Vitiligo cover lotion is used all over the world, which is a testament to its effectivity. Cover lotions are available for any skin color. Any person can avail of this procedure. It does not matter if the person is too dark; all possible skin colors are available in vitiligo cover lotions. If it is not a perfect match, the lotion can at least be helpful in covering a few large areas affected by vitiligo.

Available varieties:

Vitiligo covers are available in many varieties. Normally such cover lotions are used to minimize some tattoos or for hiding unsightly birthmarks. Thus, there is a sure-fire remedy or camouflage tool for hiding any type of discoloration on the skin. Some vitiligo cover lotions are merely temporary and can fade after short periods. These are cheaper, but can be helpful for short-term use, when the patient needs to appear in public.

Vitiligo cover-ups are sometimes called dyes. These dyes are made from natural products as well as from artificial chemicals. Such cover-ups stay for longer periods, and they are considered semi-permanent makeup because they can hold up for several days or even months. Vitiligo cover-ups are not harmful to unaffected skin, which is why they are widely used.

Some vitiligo cover lotions even have the ability to treat affected skin. They contain certain substances that are essential in enhancing the stability of the skin.

Vitiligo cover lotions differ in purpose and therefore, the cost factor also varies. The cost of the product depends on their effect and make. You can get some simple skin toners or cleansers for about a few dollars, but higher-quality and longer-lasting cover lotions can cost much more.

Vitiligo is a skin disorder caused by a deficiency in melanin pigmentation. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the skin’s coloration. In vitiligo, the natural color of the skin turns pale or white because of the deficiency in melanin. The direct reason for the skin turning white is the death of melanocytes. The dead cells thus appear as white patches as the pigment can no longer be manufactured. This discoloration can sometimes affect the hair cells as well. This skin disorder has been found to affect men and women all over the world. Some doctors believe that the cause of this skin disorder is because of a lack of an efficient immune system. The exact cause, however, has not yet been determined.

Immunity problems:

Our body’s immunity is responsible for preventing the occurrence of dangerous infections and contaminations. Immune deficiency is said to result in a number of health problems, and it can also lead to the death of melanin, causing vitiligo. The death of melanin cells on the top layer of our skin can turn the entire skin white. The discoloration is due to a lack of supply of nourishment to these cells. The nourishment to the cells is apparently blocked by certain factors, including sunlight, heat, and other microorganisms.

Heredity:

Due to the increased incidence of vitiligo in families, this condition is said to be passed on from one generation to another.

Chemical exposure:

Normal skin can withstand only a certain amount of heat and other allergens. If the skin is exposed to some strong chemicals, it can easily kill the melanin cells, and the areas touched by the chemicals are the only areas affected. Corrosive acids are dangerous but there are also some other chemicals that can cause minor damage, such as those resulting in vitiligo.

Sunburn or cut becomes a cause:

Sunburn is actually a skin disorder that is somehow related to vitiligo. The skin cells also are killed from prolonged exposure to sunlight. Additionally, if there is a cut on the skin, it can be exposed to infection. Notice that even though the cut is healed, a scar remains because the cells cannot benefit from a complete cure. When treating vitiligo, the skin should not be exposed to sunlight for a long time.

Stress:

Doctors also suggest that stress can become a cause for vitiligo. The type of vitiligo may be different for different people. The symptoms may vary, depending on the cause. When stress is experienced often, there is a high possibility of suffering from vitiligo because the nervous system gets damaged, and this effect causes the skin to receive abnormal impulses, resulting in the death of the cells.

Viral cause:

Viral infections to the outer layer of the skin can affect melanin. Viral infections on the skin could thrive as they feed on the melanin cells; the microorganisms get their nourishment from the melanocytes and use them as hosts. The viruses affect the growth of the melanin cells and gradually kill them. Thus, a virus can become a cause for vitiligo.

This video shows another important cause of vitiligo. It is also said that vitiligo occurs when thyroid issues exist. Birth control pills can also be causing vitiligo. Birth control pills can affect the immunity of the person thereby allowing foreign organism to affect the melanocytes there by resulting in melanin loss.

Topical steroids are creams, which can be used to cure the skin disorder vitiligo, but their continuous use has been known to lead to various side effects like tachyphylaxis, steroid rosacea, skin atrophy, stretch marks, alteration of infection, topical steroid allergies, and glaucoma.

Steroid rosacea:

This is a common side effect, which is noticed in people who already have rosacea. It often occurs when steroids are used to cover the white patches in the face. Mild use also leads to these side effects. Due to the side effects experienced, people will go for some other strong steroid cream, which will result in some other side effect; as a result, people using it will stop it immediately, so the face is left with red patches as a result.

Tachyphylaxis:

Tachyphylaxis is where the skin is no longer responsive to the drug. It is a condition in which the skin reacts with vasoconstriction as a consequence of topical steroids. With repeated usage, the skin develops capillaries for which larger dosages will be required, and where more frequent applications of the steroid will be required. The side effects will be noticed after continuous use – that is, after 4 days – and once the treatment is stopped, the constricted blood vessels will then revert to normal after 4 days.

Stretch marks:

Continuous use of topical steroids on areas where one part of the skin touches another, like the groin areas, will result in side effects like stretch marks. Once the stretch marks appear, they can no longer be eliminated as they are largely permanent, and the stretch marks will be very itchy. In order to get relieved from the feeling of itchiness, a lower-potency steroid would be used. It is thus better to reduce the use of topical steroid creams.

Skin atrophy:

Continuous use of topical steroids on the same area will lead to the thinning of the epidermis. Due to this, the skin will become shiny, wrinkled, and dry. This condition is reversible in most cases if the use of topical steroids is stopped.

Topical steroid allergy:

There are people who are severely allergic to the use of topical steroid creams. In such cases, topical steroids can be used for some days, but if the allergic reactions persist, then their use must be stopped at once, and an immediate consultation with the doctor must be made.

Alteration of infection:

Because of the changes in the immune system due to the use of topical steroids, the skin will not be able to fight bacterial and fungal infection. That is, if you get itchy skin going forward, and to get relief, you apply topical steroids, then that itchy feeling will sometimes even become worse and cause reddish areas.

Why you should always get a prescription

Topical steroids are known to be very potent medications. They are classified according to their strengths. That is, Class 1 medications are the most potent, and Class 5 topical steroids are the least potent. These will be used in different ways by doctors to maximize their benefits and minimize their side effects. Some doctors may begin with high doses, tapering to lower doses after several days.

The nature of leucoderma vitiligo

Vitiligo is also known as leucoderma, and it is a chronic disorder that causes white patches on the skin. It occurs when the pigment melanin, which is responsible for producing the color of the skin, does not function properly or die. This condition affects both males and females equally, and the symptoms of multiple white patches are the same in both genders. It is evident in areas that are most commonly exposed to sunlight, but will also affect other parts of the body such as the mucous membrane and the scalp.

Who are affected by this disorder?

Leucoderma vitiligo most commonly affects people between the ages of 10 and 30. When the melanocytes die or if they do not function properly, melanin is not produced, and the cells therefore do not acquire the normal skin color. It may have a genetic cause; that is, if a person has family members affected by leucoderma, then that person will have greater chances of being affected by leucoderma as well. It is also common in people who have autoimmune diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Symptoms

The major symptom of leucoderma vitiligo is the appearance of white patches on the skin, most usually on the face, around the mouth and lips, legs, hands, and arms, as these are almost always exposed to sunlight. It may be difficult to diagnose leucoderma vitiligo during its early stages, as white patches on the skin might be due to other skin infections. Some of the common symptoms of leucoderma vitiligo are:

Graying of the hair

Loss of color of the skin inside the mouth

Loss of eye color

The patches that appear will initially be seen as small patches, but later, they will start to enlarge and spread to the other parts of the body. Once you come up with such symptoms, it would be prudent to see a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis

The doctor will conduct a thorough examination to test for leucoderma vitiligo. This would involve a physical examination, looking into the medical history, and will also delve into the family history to check for genetic links. Later, for confirmation, the doctor may have a skin biopsy carried out, which will show details of the melanocytes. Later, the results will be assessed prior to confirming the presence of leucoderma vitiligo.

Treatment

Homeopathic methods are some of the best and most effective ways of treating leucoderma vitiligo. Homeopathic medicines should be taken only under the proper guidance of a homeopathic practitioner in order to avoid the side effects which are associated with it. These homeopathic remedies will help in controlling the spread of the white patches to other parts of the body and will also help in modulating the immune system. They have also been found to aid in improving the natural formation of melanocytes. Apart from homeopathic remedies, there are also Ayurvedic and other natural remedies available for curing leucoderma vitiligo.

There are many reasons behind discoloration of the skin. Discoloration is a problem which is associated with skin pigmentation. Healthy skin should have an even coloration, and if there is any discoloration detected on normal skin, then it is considered to be unhealthy. Sometimes, discoloration is not actually big issue, unless the person affected by it finds it annoying or embarrassing. People with a reduction in or a defect in melanocyte function are more prone to discoloration of the skin.

Types of skin discoloration:

Basically, there are 6 types under this disorder. They are hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation, redness, pale skin, yellowness, and cyanosis.

Hypopigmentation

It will generally occur when the affected skin is lighter compared to normal, unaffected skin. This is caused by a decrease in melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.

Hyperpigmentation

This occurs when the affected skin is darker when compared to normal, unaffected skin, and this is caused by an excessive amount of melanin.

Pale skin

This condition is characterized by a paleness in the skin tone, or when part of the skin is pale. It is mainly caused by a lack of exposure to sunlight as well as a lack of oxygen.

Redness

This is a common type of discoloration in which part of the skin becomes overly red; it occurs when a person has a health condition such as rashes, dermatitis, and allergies, and may also be due to sunburn.

Yellowness of the skin

This is when the skin tone becomes too yellow in color, and even the fingernails and the toenails may become yellowish. It is basically caused by a liver-related problem. Another obvious symptom of a liver condition is a yellowing of the whites of the eyes. People experiencing this type of discoloration are advised to consult a doctor immediately.

Cyanosis

This occurs when there is a deficiency in the supply of oxygen to the blood. The symptom is when the skin turns bluish.

Causes of skin discoloration

A discoloration in skin tone can be caused by any of the reasons mentioned below.

It can be due to diseases like heart disease, liver disease, albinism, and a lot more

It may be observed in women who are pregnant, but the problem will disappear after the woman gives birth

It can be a side effect, if you are taking any medication

It can be caused by some food item included in a particular diet

Increased exposure to the sun

Treatment for skin discoloration:

Before embarking on a treatment regimen, the exact cause and type of skin discoloration should first be determined. It is also better if you consult a doctor or a skin expert if you come up with any discoloration of the skin. By doing so, the doctor will first diagnose the disease and then will suggest the type of treatment which has to be carried out. There might be some types of medication or creams that may be prescribed, and that should be taken with regularity. The drugs are to be taken only via prescription from a dermatologist or other medical professional. However, sunscreen lotions, which are available over the counter, should always be used if you expect to be exposed to sunlight for extended periods to avoid discoloration of skin and prevent the occurrence of any serious skin disorders.
